Sepia Saturday: Caravans

The theme photo for this week's Sepia Saturday suggests birds, beasts, caravans, travelling, ladders etc. I'm going with caravans.

Phil and Alan and the family's bondwood (3ply) caravan, c1953
Phil with his mum and dad, aunt and grandma, same van, early 1950s.
So 60 years later that kid gets his own van. We've just ordered a new caravan and will pick it up in about six weeks. It has more bells and whistles than the one above! Australia here we come.

Phil and I both come from families that enjoyed caravanning and we have done quite a bit ourselves (in borrowed vans). But now we have our own, and we'll be joining the thousands of other 'grey nomads' circumnavigating this country and heading north for the winter. Hopefully I'll be able to add more birds to my Australian list, take many photos of landscapes, plants and fungi, make contact with lots of relatives on our family tree to glean snippets of information and photos to add to my database, write lots of blogs about our travels and upload photos to Flickr. Sometimes we'll stay home to play with the grandkids and pull the garden back into order, and do a bit of work to pay for the next holiday.

  1. The old style campers are so cute - look like big lima beans. Today's campers have all the comforts of home, like you said. My brother-in-law and his wife are serious campers who seem to be on the road more than at home too.

  2. Love the look of your new van !! I have an old 1968 Cheltenham, but my family won't be seen dead in it with me !! Similar at: http://goo.gl/ZPGHK

  3. That is such a tiny caravan; I think I stayed in one like that with my family when I was young. Your new van looks ready for an adventure - have fun!

  6. Your family has been caravaning for quite some time. What fun. I have an RVing friend who keeps me supplied with her photos from her traavels -- hope you do the same.

  9. We lived in a static caravan for a time early in our marriage. Fine but I wouldn't go back. Otherwise we have holidayed in caravans by the sea. Neither of us have ever had the urge to pull one behind our cars. Looks great when someone else does it though. Now a trip round Australia would be something special.

  10. Oh yes the camping caravans. we have done many of those over the years, starting out with an old cab over camper on a truck, we thought was the height of comfort back in 1970, well it was a step up from tents & sleeping bags on the ground...we are way upscale today with our 3rd motor coach, see on my blog...we meet lots of interesting folks and see much about this country..Australia would be an adventure...

  11. Super to be planning to travel again...such a great adventure which many dream about (either from their past or their fantasies). For me it's my past. So I hope like everyone has already said, that you'll keep sharing your travels here. Oh drat, I hate word verification, but for this one time, for you.

  13. I remember holidays in a similar van - not always fun memories because my father an caravans did not get along. I wish you happy adventuring in your new van. Maybe you'll get to Lobethal one day.

    1. We were in Birdwood last year and Charleston several years ago! Never been to Lobethal. We love the Adelaide Hills and the beautiful stone buildings and will definitely be back.
