Swimming in the 1920s, probably at Kow Swamp. |
Kow Swamp is a shallow freshwater lake in northern Victoria near Gunbower now used for water storage and some recreational activities such as fishing and birdwatching. It is also a significant archaeological site of Aboriginal heritage and history.

The four ashore appear not to know if they're happy or not; but the two out in the water are smiling. Funny - I picture a swamp as full of trees and tall weeds and grasses, not wide-open water. Does this swamp drain occasionally?
ReplyDeleteKow swamp isn't a very attractive name for a lake but it looks nice enough in the photo. Shame you can't identify the swimmers.
ReplyDeleteKow Swamp looks a lot like some of our lakes up here in Maine, in the US. And kids are kids, aren't they? All having fun...
ReplyDeleteBest looking swamp I ever saw. Had it been turned into a man made lake?
ReplyDeleteI've always thought of a swamp as shallow water with trees and other things growing out of it - not a wide open body of water that looks to me like a reservoir. Interesting. Those on shore look unsure of how they feel, but the two in the water look like they're having fun.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo and such an interesting place for swimming. It sounds like swimming is no longer allowed. Yes? No?
ReplyDeleteSuch fun to have a photo of strangers from back in 1920...and as dos comments have mentioned, swamp does denote a different image for me too.
ReplyDeleteSo the photographer was sitting on the sand and said, "Hey, look here! Look here!" And thus we have this charming shot to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteInteresting name and place. Fishing and bird watching appeals to me much more that sitting in gritty sand. But then again I'm not a kid anymore.
